We will be comparing recycling options between Kalamazoo, MI and Chicago, IL.  We are going to be communicating with fourth grade students.
We will have the students from Kalamazoo contact students from Chicago after we have set up the initial project, and after they have done some research to find recycling centers in their area, so our students can collaborate ideas together and find companies in their respective areas that recycle.
We would begin by asking if they do recycle.  This is very important because we need to find out if they are recycling or not.  We would want to ask the students if they recycle and what it is that they do with the objects that they recycle.  Do they have to take their recyclables to a drop off center or is it curbside?  If they do not have a curbside pickup for recycling, do they know of any places in their area where they can take their recycling? If they do have curbside recycling how often are the recyclables picked up?
What types of materials are recycled? Is there a place to take hazardous materials in the area? How are hazardous materials handled? How does recycling affect landfills? What is the amount of materials that are saved from being placed in landfills?
Is there anything that we can use to reduce the amount of trash we are throwing away?
What type of Styrofoam can be recycled?
Where can I take used alkaline batteries, do they have to go somewhere specific or can they go with the other recyclables?
What are the effects of not recycling?
Does your school have a recycling program/bins?
Do your  families promote recycling at home?
The students can compare ideas on other materials that can be recycled. What alternatives are there to landfills.
The students will begin to assess their recycling habits and hopefully find ways to improve these habits.
The students can see what other students think about recycling and learn about recycling programs in a different city.
If there is not a recycling program at the school already, hopefully the students can use what they learn about recycling to start a program at their school. The students can also take what they learn back home and help educate their families and start recycling at home.
